OnlyJumpers.com introduced live auctions of young horses in the United States, with successful auctions in Ocala and Wellington. The New York Auction will feature quality young horses from a variety of top breeders in Europe, including Team Nijhof, Kees van den Oetelaar, Egbert Schep, Hans Dings, and Joan Van Gorkum.
Past auction buyers include trainers, amateurs, and breeders, and many of the young horses sold at previous auctions have already shown promise at stud and in the show ring for sport and investment. With the horses presented at the New York Auction, there is a range of prices (and no reserve prices) available that provide opportunities for all types of buyers.
Professional rider Amanda Flint helped her clients purchase two horses at the 2011 auction in Ocala, Chester VDL and Coverboy. Chester VDL (Silverstone x Matterhorn) was sold, but has had a successful record in the Five Year Old Young Jumpers and placed second in the championships at the Hampton Classic Horse Show with Santos Lamarca.
Flint has campaigned Coverboy (Veron x Corland) in the Five Year Old Young Jumpers and they have had success in Ocala, Devon, and Vermont. Flint plans to show Coverboy at the Young Jumper Championships – Midwest in Kentucky in two weeks. Flint described, “We picked him because he was so athletic. I think he’s going to be a great amateur horse one day. He’s super careful and very brave. He’s probably one of the most consistent with carefulness that I have in my barn.”
“It was fun and very well done,” Flint said of the auction, “and the horses were well represented. I don’t think anyone was unhappy with what they bought. For sure I would recommend finding horses at the auction. The nice part is that they’re already here, and you see what they’re like in a new place. The situation of seeing them and buying is easier.”
Gustavo Mirabal of G&C Farm purchased Don Vito (Dior) at the 2012 auction in Wellington. The 2008 KWPN gelding by Quaprice Z x Jus de Pomme shows great promise and will compete in the Five Year Old Young Jumpers this winter. “We are excited about the future of Don Vito,” Mirabal said. “We had a lot of fun at the Wellington auction and believe that Don Vito will be a successful competitor for G&C Farm.”

Vicky Castegren, Owner/Agent of Hyperion Stud, purchased two horses, Dakar VDL (Cardento x Marlon) and Dakota VDL, at the Wellington auction. Dakota VDL (Casall x Contender) was recently approved and licensed with the BWP NA and received the second highest score in their history for stallions. He will be presented at the American Holsteiner Association in just a few weeks, then will go into competition mode for the winter in the Five Year Old Young Jumpers. Castegren said Dakota VDL bred this year, and she is excited for the foals that will be on the ground in 2013.

Castegren said of the auction, “It was an entertaining atmosphere. With high energy, cocktails, and food, it makes it exciting.”
While attending the live auction is an easy way to find a great new horse, what may be even simpler is logging onto your computer and watching the livestream of the auction. By going to www.onlyjumpers.com/live_stream, you can see the presentations of horses and place bids.
One buyer who did that was Samuel Jimenez of Guadalajara, Mexico. Jimenez purchased Everton VDL, a now three-year-old by Canturo x Corofino I, online from the 2011 auction in Bogota, Colombia. Jimenez said of his horse, “I’m giving him all the time in the world to mature. He’s doing great and he has such a great mind. I’m in love with him. I have just started to ride him, so he hasn’t done any show jumping yet, but I can promise you that he will have a great future in the show jumping world!”
On Friday, September 14, there will be a presentation of all of the young jumpers at the Hunter Arena at Old Salem Farm so that everyone can see the horses’ talent jumping under saddle. The horses will be shown by jumping under saddle by international riders Hillary Dobbs, Peter Leone, and Hanno Ellerman, as well as up-and-coming grand prix star, 16-year-old Michael Hughes. The presentation will be at 5 p.m. following the $50,000 American Gold Cup Qualifier. Both Friday’s presentation and Saturday’s auction will also be streamed live online. If you would like to try any of the horses offered before the auction, please email info@onlyjumpers.com to set up an appointment. The horses have been inspected by recognized vets in Holland and by Dr. Kit Miller in New York. X-rays and vet reports are available upon request.
